The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has condemned the State of Romania for demanding proof for sex reassignment surgery from transgender people applying to change gender marks in their identification documents. This is a big win among transgender people who advocate for use of gender identity, instead of genitalia, as determinant of sex marks in identification documents. Sex change surgery should never be a requirement for transgender persons to be able to change the sex marks in their birth certificates, national identity cards, passports and other documents.
